Ukraine and Pavlo Makov “Piazza Ucraina, Ukraine Square” and at the Scuola Nuova della Misericordia, Venice Biennale Art Exhibition
Pavlo Makov was born in 1958 in Ukraine, where he lives and works.
The Pavilion of Ukraine at the Venice Biennale was renamed “Piazza Ucraina” the “Square of Ukraine” and was installed in the Esedra space of the Biennale at the Giardini.
This sculpture by Pavlo Makov is, above all, a symbol of what Ukraine is currently experiencing.
A country where bombs and missiles don't care what they kill and destroy, from civilians to works of art.
A country where one is obliged to protect its cultural heritage, witness the history of a people that the Russian invader wants to erase, to wipe out with a line of fire.
So we saw most of the statues in the squares of Ukrainian cities being protected from bombing by covering them with sandbags.
What Pavlo Makov did here in the Biennale Gardens.
The Scuola Nova della Misericordia on the Fondamenta of the same name in the Cannaregio Sestiere was also entirely dedicated to Ukraine.
In addition to visiting it free of charge and admiring the first floor of the Scuola covered with frescoes, you will also appreciate many quality works exhibited there.
In particular, a giant portrait of a five-year-old Ukrainian girl, a refugee, is particularly moving. Other equally engaging works take on the theme of war and peace.
